Raise the problems in the school environment with the school
Ask for a meeting with the school
Once you have established cooperation among the parents (see the previous chapter), it is time to arrange a meeting with the school. Keep a polite and constructive tone, and ask for a meeting with the school’s management. It is best if several parents and their representatives attend together.
Draw up a joint agenda for the meeting focusing on which measures you want started. Put the emphasis on a constructive meeting where you appear united before the school.
If you have not succeeded in creating cooperation with other parents and/or representatives, you can still have a meeting with the school focusing on improving the school environment.
Bring documentation of the problems in the environment and of the various measures you are proposing. If the school does not acknowledge the problems in the environment, it may be worth spending time on reaching agreement that problems exist and that they should be tackled. Then move on to a constructive dialogue about possible solutions. Put forward your proposals, listen to the school’s input and any proposals it may have, and try to reach agreement on concrete measures.
Make sure you have a follow-up plan before the meeting ends. Agree what has been agreed, when it is to be carried out, and set a date and time for a follow-up meeting.
