Using blogs and social media

Publishing the case yourself can give it force, but content on the internet can stay there for ever. As a general rule, we advise against sharing personal information about the child.

Today you can publish bullying cases yourself, through blogs and social media. Sometimes the content spreads widely and has a great effect, but there are several reasons to think carefully first.

One example of constructive use of a blog in a bullying case is the blog written by Line Sommer Hoel. It probably contributed to her succeeding in her damages case. Line was seriously ill when she experienced what many would call an abuse of power on the part of the municipality. The blog was her way of being heard. Even so, we are cautious about recommending blogging and sharing on social media. That applies both to children who blog themselves and to adults who blog about their children or share personal information on social media.

Adults must safeguard the child’s privacy. If the child wants to blog, they should help to guide the child so that what the child posts is not to the child’s disadvantage, now or in the future. Parents should give serious consideration to advising the child against blogging.

In the main, we advise against sharing personal information online. The hope is that the bullying case will soon be a memory, whereas information on the internet can stay there for ever.
